International Mother Earth Day, 22 April

International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to remind each of us that the Earth and its ecosystems provide us with life and sustenance. It also recognizes a collective responsibility, as called for in the 1992 Rio Declaration, to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity.

International Mother Earth Day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.
In this year, when economic growth and sustainability join hands, Earth Day also promotes sustainable development – in which human development goals meet, while sustaining the ability of natural systems to continue to provide the natural resources and ecosystem services upon which the economy and society depend.

    Pillars of sustainable development

Some of sustainable developments’ goals are:

    • end poverty
    • end hunger
    • ensure healthy lives
    • ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation
    • take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
    • protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainable forest management, combat desertification

Every year Earth Day has its own theme, in which is signified an important part of nature that needs more attention. The theme of 2015 is “Water Wonderful World”.

“Earth Day should encourage us to reflect on what we are doing to make our planet a more sustainable and livable place.” – Scott Peters
