Every year, the United Nations Environment Program honors World Environment Day on June 5 to raise awareness about environmental issues and call for action. The theme of this year’s event of UN Environment Program asks everyone to evaluate our consumer habits: how we shop, eat and travel and it’s called sustainable lifestyles, and the slogan is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care.”
The theme for 2015 is how the well-being of humanity, the environment and economies ultimately depends on the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.
World Environment Day is considered one of the most important events of environmental protection. Actions that are organized during these days warning us on adverse human activities that call into question of their own survival, and point out the procedures that must be taken in order to change behavior and respect for the environment.
Damage caused to the environment in the past few decades, are constantly increasing. Every year increasing amounts of waste are produced, and the carbon dioxide emissions and consumption of ‘dirty’ energy are increased. Due to various pollution, the quality of life has been significantly reduced, especially in urban areas.
Each year, the UN Environmental Programme runs several campaigns to get the word out about the World Environment Day theme. Environmental organizations, schools and groups of all kinds typically organize events leading up to and taking place on June 5.
Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our way of life. Living well within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future.
