Kao va\u017ean izvor hrane za \u010dovjeka, krumpir je dostupan tijekom cijele godine, jer obzirom na podru\u010dje uzgoja, mo\u017ee se brati svaki mjesec. Jestivi dio biljke krumpira su gomolji, nabujali dio podzemne stabljike, koji imaju funkciju osiguranja nadzemnog dijela biljke hranom. U svijetu je poznato oko 100 sorti gomolja krumpira. Razlikuju se u veli\u010dini, obliku, boji, sadr\u017eaju \u0161kroba i okusu. Me\u0111utim, lokalni zna\u010daj krumpira je vrlo promjenjiv i brzo se mijenja. U Europi je krumpir jedan od bitnijih usjeva, gdje je ostvarena najve\u0107a proizvodnja po glavi stanovnika na svijetu, no tijekom posljednjih nekoliko desetlje\u0107a potro\u0161nja krumpira najvi\u0161e se pove\u0107ala u ju\u017enoj i isto\u010dnoj Aziji. Vode\u0107i proizvo\u0111a\u010d krumpira u svijetu su Kina i Indija, koje proizvedu gotovo tre\u0107inu ukupne svjetske proizvodnje. Velika je razlika izme\u0111u zemalja po pitanju prinosa krumpira, \u010dak iako proizvode iste sorte.<\/p>\n<p>Razlog tome je \u0161to na prinos krumpira utje\u010du mnogi \u010dimbenici, poput starosti sjemena i kvalitete, praksama upravljanja proizvodnjom kulture, sortimenta te okoli\u0161ni uvjeti uzgoja. Mnogo ja na\u010dina na koji poljoprivrednik mo\u017ee pobolj\u0161ati kvalitetu usjeva, a time i pove\u0107ati prosje\u010dnu veli\u010dinu gomolja i njihov broj. Jedan od na\u010dina je ispravna i uravnote\u017eena prehrana biljaka glavnim biljnim hranjivima.
