Agricultural Sustainability and Intensive Farming Practices

By Tanja Folnović | Agronomy, Blog Comments are Closed | 19 April, 2016 | 0
Rising global population and thus doubling global food demand projected for the next 50 years poses huge challenges for the farmers and sustainability of food production and ecosystems both and the services they provide to society. Farmers are the managers of globally usable lands and by producing the food they shape the surface of the Earth, which will be continued in the coming decades also.To produce enough amount of food, thus reducing hunger and improving nutrition, farmers need to use modern farming techniques, such as modern machinery, greater inputs of fertilizer, water and pesticides, new crop strains and other technologies. Following modern farming practices and technology, farmers need take care of following sustainable farming practices and principles also.Sustainable farming means producing food, fiber or other plant or animal products using farming techniques that protect the environment, public health, human communities and animal welfare. The goal of sustainable farming is to maximize the net benefits that society receives from farm production of food and fiber and from ecosystem services. This will require increased crop yields, increased efficiency of nutrients and water use, ecologically based management practices, judicious use of pesticides and antibiotics, and major changes in some livestock production practices.

    Principles of sustainable farming

The central issue facing sustainable agriculture is the reason of farm production. Farmers grow crops or raise livestock to feed their families or to sell and earn a living in a market economy that is becoming increasingly global and competitive.

So, how can farmer achieve higher yields and food stability? Clearly, appropriate incentives are needed. In addition to the farming practices, farmers will need to rely on a base of biological and agronomic knowledge about farming practices which they can find in AGRIVI farm management system, in the form of tasks. For over 100 different crops the system guides farmers what to do during some season. Using of knowledge-intensive technologies, such as AGRIVI system for tracking of crop productions, helps farmers making the right decisions at the farm level.

Farmers are the managers of the most productive lands on Earth. Sustainable agriculture requires that society appropriately rewards ranchers, farmers and other agriculturalists for the production of both food and ecosystem services which will be crucial if we are to meet the demands of improving yields without compromising environmental integrity or public health.

Follow sustainable practices in farming and use AGRIVI system.
